Frequently Asked Questions about Freedive Courses in Melbourne.

Where are the Freedive Courses run?

Our local Freedive courses are held here in Melbourne Victoria. We generally use the Yawa Aquatic Centre in Rosebud for our pool sessions and boat dives are generally run from Rye or Portsea depending on weather.

Keep in mind we run some amazing freedive and spearfishing retreats. Our Kilsby Freedive Retreat is held in Mount Gambier and we dive the clearest water you will ever see in the Kilsby Sinkhole. Our Spearfishing Retreat is held on the outer reefs of the Whitsundays Island group were we sail out there and spend 5 magical days on the water learning and experiencing some ultimate tropical spearfishing.

What experience do I need to do a Freedive Course?

You need to be 12 years or older. You need to be comfortable snorkelling and be able to swim 200m. If you are unsure about your level of experience please contact us and we can assist you. If you are not that experienced the PADI Basic Freedive Course is what we suggest as that covers the theory and pool session of the Level 1 freedive course. Then you can complete the boat session at a later date to complete your full freedive course.

What if I don't have all the right gear? Can I hire the equipment?

We have some of the best hire gear available for you to hire on our courses. We recommend a full 2 piece 5mm wetsuit (with an integrated hood), Freedive fins and a rubber weight belt. It's also best to have the correct gear for the course as it assists us as instructors to give you feedback on your technique and help you improve and become a better freediver. We have partnered with some of the best local and international suppliers & manufacturers to bring you the best hire equipment available in all of Australia. We boast the largest fleet of freedive equipment (including fibreglass or carbon freedive fins) available in all of Australia. The total value of the equipment hired is over $1600!

Is Melbourne a good place to freedive?

Melbourne is a great place to learn how to freedive. There are some amazing locations around Melbourne to freedive and some things that just have to be seen! From weedy seadragons to scallops there is something for just about everybody to enjoy and experience here in Melbourne. In the summer months Port Phillip Bay, where we run our freedive courses from, gets to around 22 degrees and in the winter months it drops to around 13 degrees. We generally have some of our best visibility in the Bay in winter but you will need a good freedive suit to keep you warm.
